A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
